Wireless Flash Transmitters: Canon ST-E2 | Nikon SU-800
Other Flash Accessories: LumiQuest Pocket Bouncers | R2 Riser Set

Metz MS-1 Wireless Macro Flash

The Metz MS-1 Macro Flash is a wirelessly controlled dual point flash. The MS-1 includes the necessary programming to work with most cameras.

Many Nikon models have a wireless controller built-in and do not need any other equipment to work with the MS-1. These cameras include the D70, D70s, D80, D90, D200, D300, D300s, D7000, D7100, D7200, D500, D600, D610, D700, D750, D800/D800E and D810. For other Nikon models, you need Nikon's SU-800 Wireless Speedlight Commander.

The Canon Rebel T3i, T4i, T5i, T6i, T6s, T7i, 60D, 70D, 77D, 80D, 7D and 7D Mark II can control wireless flashes without additional equipment. All other Canon models need the Canon Speedlite Transmitter ST-E2. The MS-1 uses 2 AAA batteries, but still delivers 100-125 flashes per pair of batteries. Rechargeable batteries are recommended.

When ordering, we need to know the camera manufacturer as well as the filter thread size of your lens (usually shown on the inner side of the lens cap). Call us for help if you cannot find the filter thread size.

Nissin MF18 Macro Flash

The Nissin MF18 macro flash is available for Canon (E-TTL) or Nikon (iTTL) digital cameras. The MF18 features full TTL exposure control by the camera, Manual Mode(full power to 1/64 power) and Fine Macro Mode(1/128 power to 1/1024 power) for high precision flash control.

The MF18 also features a flash sync socket which allows it to trigger external flashes. You can have a portrait studio setup and simply plug in the sync cable when you want to take portraits.

Note: the Nissin MF18 is not currently compatible with the latest Canon camera models (T7i, 77D and 80D). Nissin is working on a firmware upgrade and we hope the MF18 will be compatible with these Canon cameras shortly.

When ordering, we need to know the camera manufacturer as well as the filter thread size of your lens (usually shown on the inner side of the lens cap). Call us for help if you cannot find the filter thread size.

Canon MR-14EX II Macro Flash

The all-new Macro Ring Lite MR-14EX II is ideal for EOS quality close-up photography when used in conjunction with one of Canonís EF macro lenses. Redesigned as a perfect complement to contemporary digital SLR setups, it is the most advanced macro flash Canon has ever produced.

It has a maximum Guide No. of 34.4 ft./10.5m at ISO 100 and a twin-tube design where both flash tubes can be directed to fire independently or together. Sophisticated white LED focusing lamps and two forms of modeling lights make for easy and accurate previewing of lighting effects. Infinitely adjustable in any lighting condition with its illuminated dot-matrix LCD, the Macro Ring Lite MR-14EX II has 12 custom functions and supports E-TTL wireless autoflash when linked with one or more Speedlite 600EX-RT flashes.

Canon's standard 60mm and 100mm macro lenses include a lip at the front of the lens that the MR-14EX II clips onto. If you are using the 100mm L macro lens, you need the Canon Macrolite 67 adapter which adds the mounting lip to the front of the lens. The MR-14EX II now features a 67mm filter thread that allows filters to be added to the front of the flash and a 67mm lens cap is included that clips onto the flash.

Canon MT-24EX Twin Light Macro Flash

The individual flash heads on the MT-24EX Twin Light allow for a wide range of positioning to help elliminate/minimize specular highlights on the subject. This is particularly handy for anterior photos which will be used by a dental lab for shade matching. Posterior shots and mirror shots can be tricky with this flash as the flash heads are farther from the lens than a ring flash. Uses 4 "AA" batteries - rechargeable batteries are recommended.

The Canon MT-24EX includes a mount for the flash heads that clips onto the end of the Canon 100mm and 60mm macro lenses. If you are using the Canon L 100mm IS macro lens, you also need the Macrolite 67 adapter which screws into the end of the lens and adds the mounting "lip".

Another mounting option is the PhotoMed R2-U Dual Point Flash Bracket (shown below). This bracket is designed to allow the Canon MT-24EX flash heads to be positioned next to the lens for intraoral mirror shots and posterior views. You can also turn the flash heads out to the side for esthetic anterior views, smile shots and lab communication.

We also carry Stofen diffusers that slip over the front of the flash heads to soften and diffuse the light.

Canon 270EX II Wireless Macro System with R2-U Bracket

The Canon 270EX II flash is a compact flash that can be controlled wirelessly by a Canon flash transmitter.

The PhotoMed R2-U Dual Point Flash Bracket allows the Canon 270EX II flash heads to be positioned next to the lens for intraoral mirror shots and posterior views. You can also turn the flash heads out to the side for anterior esthetic views, smile shots and lab communication.

The 270EX II System includes (2) Canon 270EX II flashes and the PhotoMed R2-U flash bracket. Flash and Bracket packages are also available with the new versions of the R2 Bracket (Ballhead and Wide). The flashes and R2 bracket are also available individually.

Canon ST-E2 Speedlite Transmitter
The Canon ST-E2 adds wireless flash control to Canon cameras that do not have a built-in wireless flash transmitter allowing them to work with the Metz MS-1,
Canon 270EX II and Nissin i40 flashes.

PLEASE NOTE: if you plan to use the Lumiquest Pocket Bouncers with the Canon 270EX II flashes, you will need the Canon ST-E2 transmitter - even if your camera has a built-in wireless flash transmitter. This is due to the location of the sensor on the 270EX II flash. The sensor needs "line of sight" to the camera in order to function. If you are using the flash with Pocket Bouncer, the flash is turned away from the camera and will not be triggered by the camera.

The ST-E2 is a much stronger transmitter than the built-in models and can trigger/control the flash even when it is turned away from the camera. Please call us for more info if you have any questions.

The Canon ST-E2 uses a 2CR5 battery (not included).

Nikon R1 & R1C1 Wireless Macro Flash

The Nikon R1 Macro Flash works with all of Nikon's SLR digital cameras, but there are different configurations depending on the model:

The R1 works with the D70, D70s, D80, D90, D200, D300, D300s, D7000, D7100, D7200, D7500, D500, D600, D610, D700, D750 and D800/D800E and D810 cameras which have a built-in wireless flash transmitter and can control the macro flash heads wirelessly.

All other Nikon digital cameras need the R1C1 with Nikon's SU-800 Wireless Controller.

The D100 and D1-series require the R1C1 and the SC-30 cables as these cameras did not support iTTL wireless flash control.

The R1 and R1C1 packages includes a wide variety of accessories:

  • 52mm, 62mm, 67mm,72mm and 77mm mounting rings to accommodate most AF Nikkor lenses
  • AS-20 Speedlight Stands
  • SJ-2 Color Filter Set, SW-C1 Flexible Arm Clip
  • SW-11 Extreme Close up Positioning Adapter
  • SW-12 Diffusers, fitted Storage Case and more.

Shown above is the R1C1 (2 flash heads and SU-800 wireless transmitter) on the Nikon digital camera.

Shown below is the PhotoMed R2-N Dual Point Flash Bracket. This bracket is designed to allow the Nikon R1 flash heads to be positioned next to the lens for intraoral mirror shots and posterior views. You can also turn the flash heads out to the side for esthetic anterior views, smile shots and lab communication.

If you are using the R2 Bracket and you do not need the accessories that are packaged in the R1 Macro Flash Package, you can purchase the Nikon SB-R200 flashes individually and save $150 over the R1 Macro Flash Package.

The R2 Bracket and (2) SB-R200 flashes are also available as a kit - listed below.

Note: Nikon does NOT recommend using rechargeable batteries in the SB-R200 flashes (R1 and R1C1 kits). The rechargeable CR123 batteries that are currently available have a higher voltage rating than standard CR123 batteries and they can damage the flash.

Nissin i40 Wireless Macro System with R2-U Bracket for Canon or Nikon
The Nissin i40 is the latest small, wireless flash that can be used on the R2 bracket. It is available in Canon and Nikon versions and can be used with cameras that have wireless flash capability (either built-in or with external transmitters - see camera models listed in the Canon 270 or Nikon R1 sections).

The Nissin i40 costs a little bit more than the Canon 270EX II and Nikon SB-R200 flashes but the i40 beats them both in terms of power and flexibility:

- the Nissin i40 is nearly twice as powerful as the Canon 270EX II and 4 times as powerful than the Nikon SB-R200.

- the Nissin i40 uses 4 AA batteries vs. 2 AA in the Canon and a CR123 battery in the Nikon. Faster recycling and longer battery life.

- the wireless receiving sensor on the Nissin i40 is very sensitive and works from any angle. The Canon 270EX II sensor must have line-of-sight back to the camera in order to receive the signal from the camera.

- it is easier to attach accessories (like the Lumiquest PocketBouncer) to the i40 and the i40 includes diffusers that attach to the front of the flash. These are extra for the Canon and Nikon flashes.

The PhotoMed R2-U Dual Point Flash Bracket allows the Nissin i40 flash heads to be positioned next to the lens for intraoral mirror shots and posterior views. You can also turn the flash heads out to the side for anterior esthetic views, smile shots and lab communication.

The Nissin i40 System includes (2) Nissin i40 flashes and the PhotoMed R2-U flash bracket. Flash and Bracket packages are also available with the new versions of the R2 Bracket (Ballhead and Wide). The flashes and R2 bracket are also available individually.

Please note: We do not currently have a version of the polar_eyes Cross Polarization Filter available for the Nissin i40/R2 Bracket dual point flash system.

LumiQuest Pocket Bouncer and UltraStrap

LumiQuest Pocket Bouncers are popular accessories for the dual point flash systems on R2 brackets. The Pocket Bouncer redirects light at a 90° angle from the flash to soften the quality of the light by enlarging the light roughly 6-8 times over the size of the flash head itself. The Pocket Bouncers include velcro tape that you adhere to the flash. This makes it easy to attach and/or remove the Pocket Bouncer from the flash.

LumiQuest also offers theUltraStrap - a velcro strap with rubber on one side that wraps around the front of the flash and does away with the velcro tape. The Ultrapstrap offers a more secure way to attach the Pocket Bouncers to the flash and will not damage the surface of the flash. This item is highly recommended if you are using the Pocket Bouncers.

The UltraStrap and Pocket Bouncers work with Nikon SB-R200 flashes and Canon 270EX II flashes.

They also work with the Canon MT-24EX dual point flash but only with the R2 Bracket - they will not work with the Canon lens mount that is included with the MT-24EX because the Canon mount does not allow the flash heads to turn back far enough to shoot out to the side.

Risers for R2 Bracket and Lumiquest Pocket Bouncers
The new R2 Risers are designed to raise the R2 bracket up so that when you set it down, the Pocket Bouncers do not come in contact with the table surface. The Riser set includes a threaded riser that screws into the bracket tripod screw and two risers that attach to the hinge screws.

The bottom photo shows a complete camera system with the Pocket Bouncers attached to the flashes and the Riser set in place.
