Canon has released the latest Rebel digital SLR cameras and this time, they introduced two at the same time. The Canon Rebel T6i and Rebel T6s are virtually identical in specifications - 24 megapixel resolution, 3" articulating touchscreen LCD display, wireless flash capability, new Digic 6 processor - and mainly differ in regards to the physical layout of the camera.

The T6i looks very much like the previous Rebels (T5i, T4, T3ii) as far as how the dials and buttons are laid out on the camera. The T6s is inspired by the layout of the Canon 70D with an information LCD panel on the top of the camera and a rear panel control dial interface. The T6s also has a locking mode dial (nice for keeping the mode from accidentally being changed) as well as a few electronic recreational upgrades.

Which is better for clinical photography? Both!

With the same lens and flash, there will be no difference between them as far as image quality goes.

It really comes down to personal preference. If you have used a higher end Canon SLR model (10D through 70D), the layout of the T6s will seem very familiar. On the other hand, if you are upgrading from a previous Rebel, the T6i will have buttons and dials where you expect to find them.

Shown above are the T6i (on left) and T6s (on right) cameras from the top and back: (click for larger images)
Nissin's MF18 macro flash is the first of five flash options for E-TTL flash control on the T6i/T6s. The MF18 is very similar to the Canon MR-14EX macro flash in that it is also a dual tube flash that is shaped like a ring. Each side of the flash has two possible positions: in next to the lens or each side can expand slightly out to the side. (shown below - image #3)

The Canon MR-14EX II macro flash is the second flash option. The MR-14EX II's flash head is shaped like a ring flash, but it is actually "split" into two arced tubes. This gives you the even illumination of a ring, but still allows you to vary the power from side to side. This affords you more creative control over the lighting. (shown below - image #1)

The third option is the Metz MS-1 wireless macro flash. The Rebel T6i and T6s are the latest Rebel models that have a built-in wireless speedlight controller. To use the Rebel T6i/T6s with the Metz MS-1, you simply pop-up the built-in flash and camera controls the flash output for a proper exposure every time. This combination is lighter and more balanced than the other two flashes and there is no power pack on top of the camera or a cable from the camera to the flash.
(shown below - image #2)

The fourth option is the Canon 270EX II Wireless Macro System with R2-U Bracket (shown below). The package includes two Canon 270EX II flashes and the R2 bracket. The T5i's built-in wireless flash transmitter controls the Canon flashes for a perfect exposure.

The fifth option is the Nissin i40 Wireless Macro System with R2-U Bracket. The package includes two Nissin i40 flashes and the R2 bracket. The built-in wireless flash transmitter controls the Nissin flashes for a perfect exposure.

There are four lens options for the T6i/T6s: the Tokina 100mm macro lens (18oz.), the Canon EF-S 60mm macro lens (11.5oz.), the Canon EF 100mm macro lens (20.5oz.) and the Canon EF 100mm L macro lens (22oz.). All four lenses offer very similar optical quality while the Canon EF 100mm L macro lens adds Canon's Image Stabilization (IS) system. The IS system makes focusing easier - a sophisticated system measures movement and counteracts the movement by shifting lens elements. If you are taking a mirror shot and you have the mirror in one hand and the camera in the other, you will be amazed how much more stable the image is in the viewfinder.

The Canon EF-S 60mm macro lens is recommended for orthodontic offices as most ortho practices take a specific series of photos: portraits along with anterior, buccal and occlusal intraoral views. The working distance (the distance from the lens to the subject being photographed) with the 60mm is less than the 100mm and 105mm lenses which makes taking ortho views easier.

For all other dental practices, a 100mm or 105mm macro lens is recommended to allow shooting smaller fields, especially in the posterior. These lenses have enough working distance to allow 1:1 closeup magnifications anywhere in the mouth. If you have any questions about which lens is best for your needs, please call us.
